Anna V. Gutierrez

My art is a reflection of who I am: every individual project I did shows a little bit of my personality, culture and background all mixed into various forms of art!

Anna V. Gutierrez, Senior Artist

Hi, my name is Anna Gutierrez, and I’m currently a senior at RHS. Although I’m originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, I have lived in Santa Maria since I was around two years old. I’m currently getting ready to graduate from RHS and to go to Allan Hancock College where I plan to transfer to UCI after two years. My art connects to my background in many ways especially showing how I’ve grown up. One example is my most recent art project of Selena Quintanilla, which shows a big moment in Latin American history. She was the first Latin American woman to win a Grammy. As a person, she has also been a part of how I look at music. I’ve looked up to her due to her amazing work and as well as feeling connected to her in the struggles of being a Mexican American living in the United States. To me, art is important to a society as it gives each society a different but unique look.  While art has a different input in different societies, in my society, art doesn’t show just creativity but also a history behind it. An example is in Mexico the art or figures of the alebrijes which are known for guiding people once they have passed is part of the history of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

When producing art, I usually feel relaxed and happy especially when it’s something I’ve been wanting to create for a while now and I finally have time to create it. My favorite kind of art would have to be drawing, because I love how even after a day or a week of stress, I can always feel calmer and relaxed in the process of it. My favorite medium art would have to be graphite. Specifically doing sketches and drawings of people either in detail or just for fun.

Although, I don’t have any plans to take an art class as of right now considering the next few years, I will be busy. I do plan to continue practicing and working on art skill whether from home or with friends. Through my art class I have learned new strategies on how to draw a person or a structure more realistically. I also learned how to mix colors and how to paint to the best of my capabilities. My art is a reflection of who I am as every individual project I did this school year as it shows a little bit of my personality, culture and background all mixed into various forms of art.
