Erik Flores Sandoval , Senior Artist

My name is Erik Flores, I’m 17 years old. I’ve lived here in Santa Maria my whole life and I plan on moving for college. I would describe myself as extraordinarily driven, once I set my mind on something I won’t stop until I finish it. Art is important to society because of the way it is universally understood. Art from any society at any point in time can be understood by anyone and interpreted by everyone. It’s essential to our understanding of how previous societies functioned. Art is a relaxing activity. It’s something that allows my brain to go on autopilot which is a rare event while in school and outside of school. I enjoy making collages and perspective drawings because they are very loose terms to describe and allow for almost any type of work. They can be any medium and any style of works. My favorite mediums are paper and graphite. Paper adds an interesting depth with the texture it provides and it removes the need to make every element of the work, since images can be cut out to make art. I don’t have plans to seriously pursue art as a profession, but I do believe it’s something that I’ll incorporate seriously into my life regularly since I’ve learned that art is something that takes my mind off responsibility, and it comes with the satisfaction of making a finished product, which ties back to my drive to create. I value achievement and art is the perfect mix of hobbies and work.
